Minutes can be downloaded from the foot of the page and individual papers can be downloaded from our Papers page here.

The first papers were delivered by Professors Christopher A. Whatley and Colin Kidd at the inaugural meeting of the John Galt Society at the University of Glasgow on Saturday6 December 2014.

On 30 April 2016 the Society held its Annual General Meeting at the University of Glasgow. Our Secretary Ian McGhee gave a paper on ‘John Galt and North America’. Galt scholar Honor Rieley gave a paper, ‘Betwitxt and Between: John Galt, Canada, and the Periodical Press’.

The Society’s second AGM was held on Saturday 1st April 2017 in 7 University Gardens, Glasgow at 10:30.  Professor Ian Campbell (who incidentally published an excellent omnibus edition of 4 Galt novels last year) has agreed to speak on “Galt and Change”.  We also intend to show an episode from the 1970s BBC Scotland production of “The Annals of the Parish.”  The tape was thought to be lost but thanks to Professor Douglas Gifford a video has been unearthed and has been digitised by the University.  We are grateful to Glasgow University for their continuing assistance to the Society.

The third AGM was held on Saturday 24 March 2018 in 7 University Gardens, Glasgow, at 10:30. Dr Craig Lamont gave a paper on John Galt & Glasgow and Prof Angela Esterhammer outlined the plans for the new Edinburgh Edition of the Selected Works of John Galt

The fourth AGM was held on Saturday 30 March 2019 in 7 University Gardens, Glasgow.  We had talks from Dr Honor Rieley of Glasgow University who has studied the literature of Galt’s time and from Dr Bob Irvine of Edinburgh University who is editing Annals of the Parish which will be one of the first volumes to be published as part of Edinburgh University’s major project to bring out more than 20 volumes of Galt’s works under the overall direction of Angela Esterhammer.

The fifth AGM was held on 26 March 2021, on Zoom. Dr Craig Lamont (treasurer) gave a talk on his book The Cultural Memory of Georgian Glasgow and the Galt connections therein.

The sixth AGM was held on 21 April 2022, on Zoom. Dr Gerard McKeever gave a paper which examined the disconnects between literature and business in Galt’s work and how his early years in Greenock influenced his later books.
